Our Society has photographers of all skill levels and development. Some of our members are novices while others are very experienced. Most of the membership falls some place in between.
We still have a few members who appreciate and use film cameras for their photography and maintain their own darkrooms but the majority are using digital cameras. Most are using D-SLR's such as Canon, Nikon, etc. but a few are using their point-and-shoot cameras as well as iPhones and Androids with amazing results. Some members do their own colour printing at home whereas others rely solely on photo labs for their printing requirements. We have members who venture into the realms of the creative with black light photography while others make use of the amazing features of Photoshop, Paintshop Pro, Lightroom and other editing software to come up with some truly creative work. With the ability to switch easily between black and white and colour photography we have a great many examples of both realms of photography being utilized to the max.
Along with still photography, audio-visual slide shows are also used by many members to present their work. This is especially so when we get into each new year with the annual presentation of our Showcase extravaganza at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. Each year we have a week-long display of members' photographs in the lobby of the Centre. The photographs are there for viewing and voting on by the general public. The week culminates with the popular Showcase show in the James Cowan Theatre at Shadbolt. This show is generally sold-out well in advance and is becoming more popular each year.
Some of us are strictly nature photographers while others photograph everything they see. A few are studio photographers, arranging everything before pushing the shutter release.
What we all have in common is a love of the art and science of photography and a willingness to share our skills with our fellow Burnaby Photographic Society members. We enjoy sharing our images and we share in the experiences of taking pictures.
We are of all ages and many native tongues. Our lives outside the Society are varied, but when we are together the photographic experiences bind us. Please enjoy our web site and you are welcome to attend one of our meetings to "check us out".
